”The Monument of our Democratic Imaginary

Distinguished citizens of Cluj,
we are honored to invite you to the public debate regarding the Ardeleană School statuary group, in the context of the ongoing pedestrianization of Kogălniceanu Street.
The question we are asking ourselves is not „with a pedestal or without a pedestal” – which seems to be the focus of multiple positions that have appeared in the public space in the past week.
Of course, the pedestal is an important theme and there will be a materialization in the physical space of a decision made in this regard. But be it already taken, and in favor of the original pedestal, the stake of the discussion goes much further than this.
Namely: what decision-making model does the decision carry forward and legitimize for the future? The very legacy of the Romanian Enlightenment and the Transylvanian School inspires us but also compels us to we ask ourselves this question.
Architects, urban planners, historians, citizens, politicians – who, using what kinds of expertise, from which positions do we participate in making decisions about our city?
How do we get informed? How do we sift, how do we amalgamate opinions? How is our decision-making process? A professional one? A political one? A mix of these?
What kind of democratic horizon does this process embody and what kind of democratic horizon does it forecast?
The echo of over two hundred years, embodied in a monument erected half a century ago speaks to us today. Mutatis mutandis, today, the Transylvanian School monument addresses and inspires our democratic imaginary again. Let us be worthy of this heritage.
